Sturgill Simpson – Life of Sin
Sturgill Simpson virtually stopped by The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on Monday to perform “Life of Sin” off of his album ‘Cuttin’ Grass Vol. 1 – The Butcher Shoppe Sessions’.
Simpson had the backing of a six-piece band and the performance was recorded at The Station Inn in Nashville, Tennessee. The Station Inn is a place known for it’s bluegrass music and it is where Sturgill Simpson performed regularly coming up in the Nashville music scene.
“Life of Sin” was originally released on Simpson’s critically acclaimed album ‘Metamodern Sounds in Country Music’ that was released in 2014. The new rendition of the song is a bluegrass take on the song. Simpson’s two newest albums, ‘Cuttin’ Grass Vol. 1 – The Butcher Shoppe Sessions’ and ‘Cuttin’ Grass Vol. 2 – Cowboy Arms Sessions’, take Sturgill Simpson back to his bluegrass roots. The albums feature bluegrass covers of songs he has released on previous albums.
David Ferguson produced both albums in the ‘Cuttin’ Grass’ series. Volume 1 was recorded at The Butcher Shoppe and Volume 2 was recorded at Cowboy Arms Hotel and Recording Spa. David has previously worked with artists like John Prine, Charley Pride, and U2.
Before releasing the two albums in the ‘Cuttin’ Grass’ series Simpson had released ‘Sound & Fury’ which was a more southern rock record than music he had released before. The album was recorded in Michigan in about two weeks. Along with the album Sturgill also released a companion anime film of the same name on Netflix. Stugill produced and wrote the film with Japanese director Jumpei Mizusaki. ‘Sound & Fury’ is nominated for Best Rock Album at the Grammys in 2021. His album, ‘A Sailor’s Guide to Earth’, won Best Country Album and was nominated for Album of the Year at the 2017 Grammys.
