Slim Gambill Brings His Music To Detroit

Almost on a yearly basis, Detroit is treated to the unbelievable skills by Lady A guitarist Slim Gambill.

Gambill, accompanied by his band of uber-talented musicians dropped into Cliff Bell’s last Friday night and treated the crowd to his jazzy and technically proficient style.  The people in attendance were very appreciative of this guitar virtuoso’s chops.

We were happily entertained to songs from his album ‘Fake Jazz and Theme Songs’ including fan favorite, ‘54321’.  Gambill also played a few new tunes including the song ‘Up’ that kicked off the show and a new one called ‘Boom’ that was actually released the same day.

I hadn’t had the chance to preview ‘Boom’ before the show but I have been listening to the track ever since.  It has that familiar guitar tone that I love but this song also brings in a touch of funk with those fabulous horns, hand claps, slick bass and keys placed perfectly off center, side to side, in the mix.

The drum mix is also a standout for me, personally.  Not only do they sound great, they are perfectly performed and fit the track exceptionally well.  Gambill’s guitar is front and center and makes it’s way through the song with a few different looks.  There’s the guitar harmonies, the smooth tone of Slim’s leads as well as a few playful moments joining the horns for brief musical bursts.

If you haven’t had the chance to check out Slim Gambill’s live show, I recommend you check out his website and watch out for dates announced in your area.  This is not a show to be missed.  He gives it his all on stage and you’ll definitely never feel like you didn’t get your monies worth.  Gambill attacks the guitar like it’s the first time he picked it up every show I’ve seen him play.  A truly gifted and passionate player.
