Founded By GRAMMY® Nominated Platinum-Selling Music Producer, Songwriter and Artist Cisco Adler & Gerber Kawasaki Co-Founder, President, and CEO Ross Gerber
GRAMMY® Nominated Platinum-Selling Music Producer, Songwriter and Artist Cisco Adler and Gerber Kawasaki Co-Founder, President, and CEO Ross Gerber have teamed up to launch Cocoon Malibu– an exciting new physical space and digital platform for creatives that is revolutionizing the way we receive and consume content in 2020.
Cocoon serves as a creative wonderland and talent incubator for the next-generation community of musicians, music producers, directors, photographers, visual artists and the brands that support them. The talent incubator digital platform offers creative partnerships, organically integrated sponsorship opportunities, experiential branded entertainment, and high-quality content developed in-house, which builds a symbiotic relationship between Cocoon creative artists and brands that fosters the artistic aspirations of the next generation of emerging talent. Cocoon enables, encourages and empowers artists to develop and places them on a stage to be seen and heard worldwide by offering free services as a pathway to jumpstart their careers and giving brands access to a curated community of talent, young creatives and their growing audiences.
“We’re an incubator and an accelerator, but we’re also a platform,” said Cisco Adler. “I’ve always said that I help turn caterpillars into butterflies. That’s the true process of an artist. As a caterpillar, you go into a cocoon. It provides safety, warmth, and a place to grow. Once you’ve developed, you spread your wings and take flight as a beautiful butterfly. This is a synthesis of everything I’ve ever done. We looked at the industry from a holistic sense, figured out development was missing, and filled the void.”
The expansive, bluff side Malibu property where Cocoon Malibu planted its roots overlooks the ocean and is outfitted with writing rooms, two full studios, and the space to turn up as loudly as possible. Meanwhile, Cocoon’s in-house creative team produces content at a breathless pace, handling everything from music videos to photo shoots from start to finish, and every day, they are capturing and editing musical moments and turning them into finished content in real time for distribution, creating a cycle of consistent branded entertainment that will benefit the artists and brands involved.
Cocoon counts fast-rising alternative artist Stay Over, producer Robbie Winward, influencer Kelly Lauren, photographer Brennan Peirson, vibe curator Sean Quae, and more among its full-time residents. Stay Over recently released an animated video for his new song, “Happy,”and the artwork and animation were created by Cocooner and animator Scuba Steve, and Cocoon Malibu produced the official video, too. On a monthly basis, events and performances stream live from the grounds. A stone’s throw from a nearby lighthouse, the “Lighthouse Sessions” has showcased everyone up and coming unknown talent to successful worldwide artists like gnash. “Live In The Rug Room” spotlights acts playing the house’s “Rug Room” a 1970’s time-machine of a space which perennially emanates good vibes. Content also includes the “Questions W/ The Cocoon” and other informational interview series as well as daily vlog-esque recaps featuring the creative cast of characters who occupy the space. The “Creative Contests” welcome participation worldwide with fans submitting videos to compete for prizes from partners such as D’Angelico Guitars, Topo Chico, Uncle Ed’s Damn Good Vodka, David Black Denim, Malibu Sandals and more.
“There’s this sort of weird reality of what’s happened recently,” said Ross Gerber. “When Cisco and I conceived Cocoon on the Fourth of July last year, things were obviously booming. And through our shared experiences in the music industry, we both came to the conclusion that the future of music was some hybrid version of live music and livestreams. With the revenue that’s being created by YouTubers, and how hard it was for musicians to make a living, we just really felt that there was a disconnect and that musicians were really the greatest influencers and yet, they’re not monetizing that. So, in building a digital model, we specifically shied away from owning a venue. And we picked a private residence as a venue because we didn’t want to be in the business of selling tickets or alcohol or food. We wanted to be in the business of marketing and creating music and musical content. So, when the pandemic hit, it forced the entire industry to look at livestreaming as a sustainable way to reach an audience. We’re 9-10 months ahead of the whole industry, and we have a model that’s been well thought out and is now implemented and ready to go. There could not be a better time to launch a free, enjoyable music product for people all around the world, and we hope they’ll watch and enjoy the daily music and creations at Cocoon.”
