“Overcast” Review by Jessica Frey
Corey Harper is getting emotional and intimate on his new EP “Overcast” now out. The latest EP is a collection of creative and heartfelt songs that highlight the talent of Harper. Anytime I hear that the musician has played nearly every instrument as well as vocals, I am instantly intrigued. The vulnerability displayed on each song is deep and personal. The songs examine loss of a friend, the hardships of overcoming addiction, life challenges and having positivity through it all.
“Sometimes, when you go through a rough spot in life, you need to go back to the beginning to rediscover, or discover for the first time, who you are. The vastness of the landscape in Oregon and overcast days reminded me that no matter the struggles, there is beauty in the journey and there is hope at the end of the day. Just because something is overcast doesn’t mean it isn’t beautiful or worthwhile in the end.” – Corey Harper
The EP starts out with a soft and brief intro with piano and synthesized vocals with “Overcast” which is immediately followed by “Harper’s first single off the EP was “Entertainment,” which showcases Harper’s voice. This song builds intensity as it progresses. The next single released was “Fade to Black” which is a song filled with heartache and sorrow felt by many trying to overcome addiction as well as those who experience the loss.
With the release of “Overcast”, Harper also released the lyric video to his new song “Crave” today. “Amidst all the deeper meaning and internally driven songs on the record, I wanted to have something that breaks them up and serves as an intermission to sway and relax to,” said Corey about the track.
“25” is my personal favorite song on this EP. This is a soft acoustic song addressing loss of a friend. The lyrics are heart wrenching and sweet expressing emotions that I hope few have to experience.
Corey has toured with artists such as, Niall Horan, Noah Kahan, Julia Michaels and has also performed at Bonnaroo, BottleRock, Sasquatch, Ohana Festival and more. Earlier this year, Corey was part of an online streamed music festival called “Uncancelled”. Hopefully we can see Corey Harper soon live but for now, we will need to get our fill through his social media, videos and streaming.
