January 8, 2020 – The King of Rock and Roll would’ve been 85 years old today. Elvis Presley who died on August 16, 1977, remains one of the most popular and celebrated artists nearly forty three years after his death. Forbes Magazine lists Presley as the second highest deceased celebrity in the world with an estimated 2019 earnings of nearly 40 million dollars. This is second only to Michael Jackson (60MM).
Graceland is still one of the most recognizable and visited houses in America with 750,000 people making the trip annually. Only the White House has more traffic than Graceland. I can tell you first hand that visiting is a special treat and there is something almost life changing about it. And I’m not even the type of person that really believes in unicorns or that sort of thing. But rolling up that driveway and seeing the house getting bigger on the approach and picturing Elvis parking his Cadillac and walking through the front door was a magical moment. Unexpectedly, it gave me chills. If you’ve been wanting to make the trip to Memphis, I would wholeheartedly recommend it. On a side note, the VIP Pass and entry into all of the museums across the street are totally worth it. I mean if you’re taking the time to go and it fits within your budget, I would say it’s sort of a no brainer.
Like many people my age, I had a Father that was an enormous Elvis Presley fan. He had pictures and even had a semi-life size portrait that was one of these velvet things with sparkles. Wish I had that thing today. Another thing he exposed me to was the ’68 Comeback Special. It’s one of the most important concerts in rock and roll history. After Elvis was sort of at a crossroads, he decided to not only play a live show but brought back with him the energy and swagger that he once owned. Him wearing the black leather outfit is one of those iconic moments that only comes along so often. Sort of like MJ’s glove and moonwalk or The Beatles on Ed Sullivan or Whitney Houston singing the National Anthem.
Presley’s place on the Mt. Rushmore of American music icons is and has been secure for decades and there are many articles and lists of his music. So in honor of The King’s birthday, I will present you with another list. This is my list of favorite Elvis songs. This is not based on success, airplay, sales or anything. This is solely based on my preference of songs to listen to. I’d love to hear which are your favorites. Please feel free to leave a comment or reach out to me on Twitter – @tommymarzband
