Harry Styles – Golden
At the beginning of August 2020, I published the article – Why The World Needs ‘Golden’ To Be A Monster Hit. I then tweeted out that ‘Golden’ deserves to have hero status.
After a summer of corresponding with fellow Harry Styles and ‘Golden’ fans, all of us happily trapped inside of this fandom are anxiously holding our collective breaths for the official release of this summer of all summer feeling songs.
If you need a little guidance to find out how I got here personally, here’s a handy road map from the start until now.
With an official release date of October 26th in the United States and October 23rd in his native United Kingdom, the latest speculation is about the release of the music video for the song.
Twitter and Instagram has been buzzing with anticipation over the possible release date. #Golden and #GoldenIsComing have both been the number one trending item on Twitter at various points over the last several days.
When this things does eventually drop, it just may literally break the internet. If it does cause at least a slow down due to high traffic, I will probably have played my part as I’m sure there will be many tweets about it.
On a side note – I’m extremely curious and excited to see what they came up with video-wise. The anticipation is killing me!
Everyone that follows me on Twitter or watches me on YouTube knows that I am a huge fan of the song & artist and have advocated for its release and success. I’ve even received a few texts from concerned friends about my behavior over the last couple of months on my social platforms.
“Is this real?” “Do you really love it that much??”
YES. It’s that good.
I’ll explain further. I just released a new episode where I broke down three versions of the song. Instrumental, A Capella and the Studio Version.
During that video and podcast I talked about this strange feeling about a song that I haven’t had in quite a while. For me, the feeling for ‘Golden’ is similar to the feeling that ‘Rio’ by Duran Duran gave me as a child. But it’s more than just listening to a song, for me.
I won’t go into great detail but having come from a poor economic environment where bare necessities like food and shelter were in peril at times, having an older sister go out and try to work at an age that would never be allowed today, made something that was seemingly as insignificant like a record seemed like everything.
She waited tables at 12 years old. She brought home left overs from the restaurant at night. We ate. But she always knew my affinity for music (she also had her own) and did everything she could to make sure I had that in my life. It wasn’t just listening to songs, it was losing myself in them. Escaping reality, if you will.
The intro to the song ‘Rio’ instantly transported me to another place every time the tape would start on the Walkman she bought me for Christmas. I’ll never forget her hard work and selfless nature or the emotional connection to the song. Ever.
On top of that, Harry has a certain swagger that only people like Simon LeBon can truly have.
It’s been decades since that time and I haven’t really felt that buzz from a particular song like that, since. Oh sure – you can hear the influences from the 90’s grunge era on pretty much every song I write. In fact, just listening to Layne Staley’s voice is therapeutic in its own way. But the feeling of ‘Rio’ has been sort of a lost treasure for me.
Until Golden.
Doesn’t matter what is going on in my life. Good times, bad times.. as soon as I hear the opening of ‘Golden’, everything is right in the world for at least a few minutes and I lose myself all over again.
Most of the people that know me personally, know that Duran Duran holds a special place in my heart and will always be on the Mount Rushmore of artists for this guy. So for me to put the new Harry Styles single in that same space is rare and almost hard to do because it feels like sacred ground. But it’s there and not going anywhere anytime soon.
I’m asking you to join me and give this one a listen. While you may not have an emotional connection or reaction, you just might find a great song to add to your playlist without any pre-conceived notions. This one is truly special.
Oh and #StayGolden
