Grace VanderWaal is moving.
Moving into a new era and sound of music. Moving into a different look. Moving to a place that has an iconic feel to it.
We’ve seen it before. Sometimes there’s just that thing that certain artists have. We’ve seen it with Bowie, The Sex Pistols, Debbie Harry, Miley Cyrus, Madonna and others that seems to have that IT factor that takes them to the next level.
In my opinion, Grace VanderWaal’s trajectory is pointing upward toward that very place.
Her latest song and video – Repeat, showcases Grace’s unmistakable vocal tone to go along with her lyrical flow that seems to be getting sharper and quicker with every release. There’s also the element of musical sensibilities that follow her into this track from her last song, ‘Don’t Assume What You Don’t Know’.
The drums have more of an organic sound and feel to them. The guitars have a sinister and distorted attitude. The bass guitar is a definite highlight for me, personally. It’s one of my favorite images from the video for ‘Don’t Assume What You Don’t Know’.
Grace has taken that next step to becoming an enigmatic front-person and maybe even ala Marilyn Manson at some point (I’m talking theatrics and stage presence here, nothing more) or PJ Harvey. She’s already brought that energy to her performances but now she seems to have found an extra gear of confidence and swagger that will keep elevating her as she tours and continues to release new music.
Eventually, at some point, I’d like to sit down with Grace and ask her about some of things I mentioned earlier. In addition, I’d like to know what moves her. What inspires her. Where she envisions herself going. So many times I’ve had the opportunity to chat with an artist and see what makes them tick. Grace definitely has my musical mind curious.
She’s in the drivers seat and I am curious to see where she goes next. I’m excited to see what the future holds for Grace but until then, I’m going to enjoy the path that she is currently on and hope that she continues her growth as an artist and eventual icon.
Trust me, this is pretty moving stuff and I’m happy to be along for the ride.
