Chris Shiflett is one busy guy. He just had his new solo album Hard Lessons come out. He plays guitar in arguably the biggest rock band in the world – The Foo Fighters. He also hosts a successful podcast called Walking The Floor. I had a chance to chat with Chris about all of that and even discussed boxer Manny Pacquiao.
We started our conversation talking about the new record (you can read a full review HERE.) that is a follow up to 2017’s West Coast Town. He recorded Hard Lessons at the same place as the former, RCA Studio A in Nashville, TN. I asked him if it was always in the plan to go back to Studio A again and record with producer Dave Cobb. Shiflett tells Sound Vapors, “Well certainly after I did West Coast Town I had so much fun I just wanted to get back out there as soon as possible. Luckily it worked out that he had some time that slotted in with the touring schedule. I was in the middle of touring with the Foo Fighters and was super busy.”
A couple of songs really seem to stand out on the record for me. This Ol’ World, I thought You’d Never Leave and Marfa On My Mind are among my favorites. I wondered if Chris had any songs that held any special meaning to him. He says, “I think the one that maybe hits me the most in the gut is Welcome To Your First Heartache. It’s about, well you know anything that hits close to home, it’s about my son and him having his first girlfriend and all of that stuff. That one and Fool’s Gold, The Hardest Lessons, those are all kind of some of the most personal ones to me.”
