I went out to Los Angeles a couple of weeks ago and as I was mapping out my week I thought about artists that I wanted to speak with. I started writing them out and then Coco Reilly’s name popped in my head. Yes! I have to speak with Coco and those harmonies. I was introduced to her voice late last year when she released a Christmas song called Christmas With You. I wrote about it HERE.
Another great thing about Coco is that she is just as charming in person as her voice is on tape. Her music greets you with a smile to your ears and her warmness, face to face, makes you feel welcome. She has a soft spoken demeanor but she knows exactly what she wants and I have no doubts that she will attain everything she has goal’d out for herself.
A good example of this is her story about recording her new album that is due out shortly. Reilly tells Sound Vapors, “Before I recorded my album, I sat my band down and said, hey this is the third time I’m recording this album – because I’m really bad at saying what I want, saying what I need or offending people. So the third time I did it, I was like, I’m out of time, I’m out of money, so here’s how it’s going to go down: I have you guys all here because you’re really talented but at the end of the day this is my art, my project.” She continues with that thought, “I was kind of saying, it’s not personal, I’m trying to get this in a way that feels cathartic in my brain I want it a certain way, it has nothing to do with you or your talent or that your idea is bad. Everyone try as many ideas as you want and then we’ll pick the one that resonates the most with what I’m trying to achieve. And it set a good tone because if I said, that’s not right, it’s not personal for anyone. You’re already here because you’re talent. I wouldn’t have you here if you weren’t talented.” This is clearly a person that knows what she wants and knows how to get the best out of people she’s working with. That’s evident when listening to her vision that is her music.
We were able to get pretty deep into more of the recording process as well as her journey in the music business. She’s lived in major hubs such as New York, Nashville as well as her current home in the Los Angeles music market. Her explanation of her home in Malibu was one of my favorite parts of the interview. Interesting, no doubt. I was exited to hear about her other endeavors such as scoring music for film projects. The other perk of doing this interview in a super cool location was the music being played through the speakers that became the soundtrack to our interview. The songs were in my wheelhouse and I enjoyed them immensely.
