Interview: Ego Kill Talent – Theo van der Loo

Ego Kill Talent are in the midst of releasing a couple of EP’s that will eventually end at a full length album.  As Theo van der Loo and I discussed, we both love the full album format.  But I have to be honest.  Getting a taste of music to come with their June release of ‘The Dance’ that features the songs, ‘NOW’, ‘Lifeporn’ and ‘The Call’, I am highly anticipating a new batch of songs.  Maybe I need to re-think this release schedule approach, after-all!

Normally I leave the placement of a YouTube video at the end of these articles but not today, my friends.  Here’s the video for the song ‘Lifeporn’ that left me completely blown away.  This is the kind of rock music that I love and sadly seems to be slowly going away.  Well, Ego Kill Talent is keeping the rock alive!  Go take a listen and then we will continue on.

Am I right or am I right?

The band had an epic tour booked that included their highly energetic live show where they switch instruments, cancelled due to the current pandemic.  The shows were to include Metallica, Greta Van Fleet and Ego Kill talent.  How’s that for a lineup??

But the band really seems to take it all in stride.  Theo tells me, “We were on the road already and we had so many great things happening for us when this thing struck.  We had just recorded at 606, the Foo Fighters studio.  Before that we had toured with the Foo Fighters and Queens of the Stone Age.  We toured Europe as well and played the summer festivals there and we toured with Shinedown.  So we had a lot of great things happening to us the last couple of years.”

Theo continues, “This year was supposed to be another great year.  We had booked, as you said, we would start the year touring with Metallica and Greta Van Fleet.  Five stadiums and then we were going to tour festivals in the U.S. also with Metallica and from there we were supposed to go straight to Europe and tour with System of a Down.  Everything got crushed with Covid.  In the first moment we were like, more in an alert.  Not really knowing what was going to happen.  We were never suffering like this is gone.  We were more like, okay this is being postponed and what should we do while touring’s not happening?

Theo tells me this all the while remaining positive and definitive but all the while giving off such a humble vibe.  He’s truly the guy you root for but know that he’s going to be just fine.  He just has that arua about him.  It’s sort of a quiet confidence.

We got into a long discussion about the production and recording process of the songs that are included on the multiple EP’s and all I can say is.. get ready.  It’s pretty impressive.  But he also confesses that the band truly bonds with one another while on stage and that he cannot wait to get back out on the road.

Neither can I.  Definitely anxious for the opportunity to catch them in concert.
