There is a new emerging band that’s about to take off. Consider this your rock and roll alert of the week.
PLUSH is an all-female rock band with a mission––to bring an all-girl rock band back to the forefront of the music industry. PLUSH is composed of four talented musicians, all under the age of 21, whose accomplishments and talent eclipse their age. This female rock force is fronted by singer/guitarist Moriah Formica, drummer Brooke Colucci, lead guitarist Bella Perron and bassist Ashley Suppa.
The band’s first single “Hate” came out on February 9, 2021, via Pavement Entertainment. Along with an accompanying video, the band already has their sights set on becoming a force in the rock music segment.
The song is very personal for frontwoman Moriah Formica. She says, “It’s about somebody who broke my heart in a very bad way. I was just so angry and sad, but I couldn’t bring myself to actually say ‘I hated you’ to that person, because the truth is I really, really loved that person, and I just hated that I loved them.”
When Moriah, Brooke and I spoke, we talked about some of their musical histories and where they are looking to go. I love hearing about musicians influences, especially in the early stages of their careers as an entry into their musical minds.
They did not disappoint.
Moriah lists kick-ass frontwomen like Amy Lee of Evanescence, Lzzy Hale of Halestorm and Lady Gaga. You want stage presence? Look no further than Lady Gaga. Powerful vocals and confidence? Lzzy Hale is a great place to start. But the person that I got the most vibes from when I previewed Plush’s new song was Amy Lee. Lee has a combination of power, range and vocal tone and to me is where I could see Moriah’s career and vocal trajectory going.
Brooke’s choices stunned me a little to be honest. I ALWAYS expect an up and coming drummer to list John Bonham as an influence. It’s sort of sacrilege not to. Bonzo is rightfully among the 3 best drummers to ever play and arguably number one. But when she hit me with Shannon Larkin from Godsmack and Danny Carey from Tool, I was floored (in a good way). I wasn’t expecting those names but I was halfway in between shocked and relieved. I thought to myself – yep, she’s going to be just fine.
I will be watching with a close eye of interest and hope to see this band rocking out at some of the biggest rock festivals in the world in the future. And if they keep making killer tracks like ‘Hate’, I have no doubts that is exactly where we’ll see them.
