Interview: Palmyra Delran

How does one keep themselves happily occupied during a worldwide pandemic?  Palmyra Delran has one of the best solutions possible.  Record music and host a show on SiriusXM.  That sounds perfect, to me.

Delran is the host of Palmyra’s Trash-Pop Shindig on Little Steven’s Underground Garage on SiriusXM.  She also has put together two singles that would fit nicely on a 45 record.

She recorded the two self-produced singles with her band Palmyra Delran & The Doppel Gang.  “Lucky in Love” and a cover of Tuff Darts’ “Who’s Been Sleeping Here?” via Wicked Cool Records we released on February 12th.

The two new tracks – recorded, engineered, and mixed by Geoff Sanoff, (Little Steven, Darlene Love, Fountains of Wayne, Jesse Malin) – is available for purchase on a red transparent wax vinyl. The first single, “Lucky in Love,” which was named The Coolest Song In The World on Little Steven’s Underground Garage’s SiriusXM channel the week of February 15, was written by Delran’s former Friggs bandmate Mitzi Dodge towards the end of the band’s life but didn’t make it past the demo stage. Never fully getting the attention it deserved, Delran decided to revive the track and give it a proper release. The flip side of the record features the cover of Tuff Darts’ “Who’s Been Sleeping Here?,” a song Delran says reminds her of when she was a kid, just starting to collect records and go to record swaps.

When I spoke with Delran, one of my favorite topics was about “records”.  I mentioned that these songs gave me a throwback feeling.  Not only for the vocal harmonies but overall with two singles being released just like they did when 45’s on vinyl were all the rage.

Delran tells me, “What you just said about the feeling of an old 45.. that’s exactly what I was going for.  We have Lucky In Love on the A side and on the flip, we have a cover of a Tuff Darts song called Who’s Been Sleeping Here.”

We share a love for vinyl and we talked about that experience of listening to a record and flipping it over.  Palmyra aims to make an album that people keep flipping over and over again to listen.  She says, “When I was a little kid I would flip the same song over or flip the album over like a million times and just really, you know, put the headphones on and hear it a different way.  That’s what I’m aiming for with my whole career, really.  I want to make a record where there’s no clunkers and that people can just keep turning the record over and listen again to the whole side”

I’m very excited for readers of this site or that follow me on Twitter to go give these songs a listen.  I feel like I’m falling deeper, every single time I listen to them.  The songs just “feel good”.  There’s also the mix.  It’s just bliss to my ears.  From that fatty snare, perfectly-balanced-the-mix guitars, all the way up to Delran’s addicting vocals and harmonies – it’s headphone perfection.  Palmyra’s vocals are almost a mix of vocalists like Debbie Harry, Joan Jett, Kim Wylde and Joey Ramone.  Perfect, actually.   Who knows?  Maybe you’ll have a similar experience.
