Salvador Santana is a lot of things. He’s a son, a brother, a father and a friend to many people. Musically, he’s a Grammy Award winner, a multi-instrumentalist, a songwriter, a vocalist and collaborator.
His latest collaboration is with world renowned DJ/Producer FELIX. The pair has come together to produce the anticipated, ‘Panic Mode‘. Salvador tells Sound Vapors, “I got together with my boy, Felix. He’s collaborated with multiple cats and he’s garnered a number one single that’s been sampled by David Guetta and Snoop Dogg. Its been fun working with him on the track.” Salvador goes on to talk about the experience, “Being a producer is where I’ve been putting a lot of my creative energy. Learning from Felix through that collaboration, I definitely feel like he helped me step out of, not my comfort zone, but just more of helping me spread out and diversify. Finding out others things that I can do creatively and musically.”
Salvador talks in more depth about the song. “Panic Mode itself is very, for me is one of the darker things I have written and been affiliated with. Usually, I’m pretty positive, I mean I keep it real but I just try to keep things more on the positive side. This was definitely darker than what I am accustomed to, but I had so much fun creating it with Felix. We had a blast in the studio working on it. At the end of the day I want people to check it out and hopefully they enjoy it as much as we did creating it.”
Salvador and I talk about some of his earlier work as well as him growing as a musician. He tells me some great stories about his father, Carlos Santana holding him when he was two years old while he played the drums and dad worked the pedals. We talked about his meeting up with one of his idols, Herbie Hancock and talking about Salvadors’ album, Keyboard City. We even talk about the album artwork (above) and what it means to him.
Salvador is very gracious and frankly, very humble, which can be a rarity for someone that has grown up around music, the way he has. He has a deep appreciation for his family’s history and heritage and it’s obvious of the influence his relatives have had on him becoming an artist and musician.
Be on the lookout for a video that Salvador says is in the works for ‘Panic Mode’. The single drops on January 18th, 2019. I am looking forward to a hopeful continuation of this collaboration between Salvador and Felix.
