Interview: Sam Tinnesz

Sam Tinnesz has a special kind of voice.  It’s powerful when it needs to be.  It’s subtle during the most intense moments.  It’s honestly one of the best vocal tones on an album I’ve heard all year.  If it’s possible to be smooth and gritty at the same time – Tinnesz has accomplished this seemingly improbable feat.

On August 7th, 2020 Sam Tinnesz released “White Doves”, his follow up and second half to the May 15th release – “Warplanes”.  Both records have their own personality and concept to them.  The cover art for each album are similar in concept but not in personality.  Pretty deep stuff, if you ask me.

I spoke with Sam to talk about the thought process behind “White Doves” as he came out of “Warplanes”.  Tinnesz says, “I always knew that the White Doves EP and the Warplanes EP would combine to make a record called, White Doves and Warplanes.  That was always my intention.  Even the label said, “you can’t technically call it an EP if there’s seven songs” and I was like, I know but I’m still going to call it an EP.” :laughs:

As we got deeper into our discussion of both albums we started talking about the duality of it all including the artwork.  Tinnesz says, “My Warplanes pictures were more dark and shadows.  In some pictures I had a snake around my neck that for me sort of symbolizes the fall and sin and the heaviness and kind of evil.  In my White Doves pictures it was more light colors and specs of light that were shooting through, kind of creating a silhouette, showing light through the dark.  That kind of feeling.”

I mentioned to him that I really liked the feel of each cover  and how his picture moves from left to right.  He tells me, “If you put those two covers together and if you are imagining yourself as the person in the picture, on the right side are the white doves, the peaceful side.  One the left are the darker, more war-torn things.  Those pictures actually fit together.  If you go to my website, you can see them fit together for a full piece of art.”

I have done just that.  It’s pretty awesome.

I absolutely love that Sam thinks and visualizes all aspects of his music this way.  It makes the user experience very interactive and even lets fans use their own imaginations while listening to the songs.

After speaking for a while I felt comfortable enough to ask what was possibly an odd question.  As I stated earlier, I’m a big fan of his voice so I had to ask: When did you know you could blow like that!?  I won’t even try to type his words and will let you hear about his journey of finding his voice straight from him.  It wasn’t quite what I expected and I’ll tell ya..  It’s a pretty unique path.
