Interview: Sofia

The band Sofia has a pretty cool way of getting people to take notice of their debut E.P. that is coming out this summer.  Stories for the Sleepless is a five song album that features a short video, story line that follows the journey of two characters.  It’s an on-going story that continues as each song gets released.  These short films also have dialog between “B” and “Tala” and take us through a journey that starts with the song ‘Coconut’.

I love a video that has a good story and even more when the song has a great sound to it.  The first time I heard Coconut – it hit me right away and immediately I wanted to hear more from the band.  The mix had some traits of the 90’s music scene in that, it was just some people playing their instruments and mixing it all together.  Didn’t have the need or want to replace every single drum hit or reverb the guitar so much that it starts to sound like a synth.  This isn’t that, it’s just straight up alternative rock goodness.

I was able to catch up with Leonardo, Bruno and Alexandre to talk about the E.P. and the recording process.  They tell Sound Vapors, “It took us a long time just because of schedules with everyone.  We are all from Brazil and we all live here.  So what kind of jump started the recordings was, we were planning this album and planning everything and initially, it was going to be a sixteen song album.  We have the songs all ready and we were like, yeah this is what we’re gonna do!  Then Bruno said, I have to go to Brazil for one month, like next week.  My friends have a studio there and I can record but I’ll only have one day.  So then we said we’re going to have to do five songs.  Got to pick the five songs for now.  So that’s why we kind of narrowed it down.  So he went there to Brazil, in Rio de Janeiro, it’s called Fibra Studios and he recorded the drums there.  So that took a month to come back from there.  Then Alex had to travel and then come back and then I was in the couple last months of college and it spread out the time line.  But I think it’s good because we weren’t in a hurry.  We weren’t like we have to put this out now, we’ve got to put it out right.  All of the guitars, bass and vocals were recorded in my studio in N. Hollywood.”

And that video?  I wanted to get more specifics on the behind the scenes.  Leo says, “The person who was filming is my brother, Lucas Bomeny.  The crew for the video is basically the band.  The three of us  and my brother filming.  Tala is the character, her name is Diana Ebe.  She’s also an artist and she’s my brothers wife.  So that’s the crew.  The three of us wrote the script together, me, Alex and Bruno and then I directed the video along with my brother.  The filming took two days.  One day to edit and one day for the vocals (dialog in the video) and while that was happening we sent it out for color correction.  So basically a week.”  The color of the video is one of the things that I noticed right away.  It has a smooth and cinematic look to it.  Leo tells me, “The color correction was by Duda Bertho.  He did an amazing job!”

The band Sofia’s story is very interesting and I’m extremely intrigued to see how the story between video characters, “B” and “Tala”, unfolds.  You can hear my entire conversation with Leo, Alex and Bruno by clicking on the link to your favorite place to listen to podcasts.
