On September 13, 2019 – Puddle Of Mudd will release their first album of original material since 2009. Welcome To Galvania contains ten new songs as well as a clean version of the album’s first single ‘Uh Oh’.
I spoke with the band’s front man and songwriter Wes Scantlin via telephone to talk about the new album and the long hiatus. Scantlin is very candid about the long time off and tells Sound Vapors, “It was kind of a heart breaker for me. I just had a couple of weird things happen in my life and I had to take a little bit of a step outside and had to work on myself. I had to change my playground and my playmates. I had to change, you know, I had a few people in my life that I shouldn’t have been hanging around. Fortunately, my family is super strong and I love them and they love me. We got through it.”
Scantlin goes on to talk about how long that journey took to happen. “It was for a couple, few years, man. It was weird. It’s probably a mega, mega, mega blessing that I had to spend some time in incarceration and some extra time in rehabilitation. I’m actually happy I had to get to that point.”
When we talk about the new record, Scantlin is aware of the time in between album and is appreciative of the response so far from the fans. “Everybody is enjoying the new single and long time Puddle of Mudd fans, you know.. they shouldn’t have to have waited so long for a new record.” I agree with him but I think fans are excited and grateful to have a new album from the band to sink their teeth into. I know I am.
Our conversation included a lot about Wes, including his favorite guitars, him being healthiest when the band is on the road and we got into a discussion about the great Layne Staley. It’s obvious that Layne is held in high regard by Wes and anyone that has read this site knows that I consider Layne Staley to be the GOAT.
You can hear my entire conversation with Wes about the Puddle of Mudd album, as well as my top ten favorite Puddle of Mudd songs, by clicking on the link to your favorite place to listen to podcasts.
