One of the most beautiful things you’ll hear today is the new single from singer-songwriter and Smashing Pumpkins touring member Katie Cole. ‘River Flow’ is the first song from Cole’s upcoming project ‘Rivers & Roads’.
Whether it was the tumultuous 2020 that many people faced or just the need to express the need to keep moving forward, the message throughout the song is uplifting and inspirational. It’s just the message that many need to hear at this point and time in history.
Cole delivers a warm and delicate vocal performance that showcases her fantastic tone and tight harmonies. The turn-arounds and half-step notes heard in lines like “Keeps calling my name” and “I keep moving through” make the song a repeater on my playlist. Those are the moments that drive my musical brain crazy (in a great way).
River Flow was produced and mixed by Howard Willing and includes another aspect that I love about the song. Acoustic guitars, left and right that fill the spectrum and provides a full, embracing sound to the listener. In addition to acoustic guitar, Ilya Toshinskiy also played mandolin on the track. Tim Lauer fills out the rest of the sound on the Hammond B3 organ and keys. All combined together, the sound is sonic perfection to my ears.
If ‘River Flow’ is any indication, fans and supporters of Cole’s highly successful crowdfunding campaign earlier this year are in for a treat when the project is released. Until then we’ll enjoy the material that flows our way.
Time to go for another listen.

Love Katie’s music and this new single is incredible. Thanks Tommy for putting into words the feeling it evokes and sharing the production pieces – allows me to listen in a more educated way.
