I just spent my weekend listening to an EP, I Should Be On A Train by Ferris & Sylvester on repeat. This is an absolutely beautiful collection of songs that has calmed and energized me at the same time.
There are 5 songs on the EP. Each unique and expertly carried out by the duo, Issy Ferris and Archie Sylvester. Their voices work together in a way that we rarely see but, when we do, they are raised up and adored. This pair is reminiscent of the greats that have held this unique harmonic balance like The Civil Wars, Simon & Garfunkel or with funk of the White Stripes. Their songs range from pure folk like the title track ”I Should Be On A Train” which is soft and melodic to more explosive and upbeat like in “A Good Man” or timeless splendor in “Knock You Down”.
My favorite song on “I Should Be On A Train” is the sweet song that is clearly about the pandemic lockdown called, “Everyone Is Home”. As I mentioned before, their voices together can calm and energize you. “Everyone Is Home” is about love and being separated from those you care about and missing them. It’s also about being scared and needing comfort. The song in itself is a sweet piece of comfort that I will put on should we find ourselves back in that situation ever again.
The EP Ends with a bewildering version of “With A Little Help From My Friends”. Ferris & Sylvester’s version of this classic is closer to Joe Cocker’s version than the Beatles original. Their duet is unique to them and the way they toss the lyrics back and forth then sing together makes this absolutely sublime.
