New Listen: Liza Anne – Desire

Liza Anne – Desire | Review

Liza Anne has a couple of different sounds that really seem to resonate with me.  On songs like Bad Vacation, Bummer Days and Devotion, there’s this vibe that has a mixture of great artists and songs like Siouxsie Sioux, Cynthia Morrow’s ‘Video Fever’, Dale Bozzio (Missing Persons), Talking Heads, Tracy Bonham (Mother) and Juliana Hatfield.

Liza has a very ear pleasing way of presenting the feel of some of those artists I mentioned and combining it all into a sound of her very own.  When her new album – Bad Vacation drops on July 24th, I recommend going through the whole thing to catch that vibe.

On Desire, she presents the listener with an introspective feel, both musically and lyrically.  The tracks starts with some excellent and glossy sounding drums that give the song a strong back beat but not in an overly dominate way.  The clean sound of the guitar that approaches the line of being over-driven, has such a great sound and is a reminder of some of my favorite guitar elements of the more subdued 90’s rock songs.

But then, those chorused guitars come in and completely take me to another level.  Both the left and right channels have sonic-goodness coming out of them.  It’s almost a shame the level in my earbuds don’t go any louder (probably a good thing for the safety of my ears, on second thought).  But as you listen to the track don’t forget to pay attention to those guitars and the explosion of sound that happens right there.

Vocally, I’m a fan of Liza’s delivery.  Her single tracked voice in the verses allow the listener to hear those little nuances in her voice.  There are also those moments where she’ll harmonize with a nice low octave that really fills up the sound.  No big trickere here.  Her vocals just sit in the mix so perfectly and her tone is a match made in heaven with the musical landscape.

As I mentioned at the beginning, this song has an introspective feel as someone almost thinking out loud and perhaps questioning the outcome of certain events.  I’ll leave the definition to Liza and like with any song, the listener can make up their own mind.

I really like every song I’ve heard from her on this offering (side note: go listen to the end of I Wanna Be There.  That outro is friggin’ amazing).  But for me, ‘Desire’ has that thing that keeps me coming back, day after day, for a listen.
