I love hearing a new artist or band for the first time. In my line of work, I am fortunate enough to be exposed to many different artists over many different genres. To me, I don’t care about the genre I’m previewing, I’m just into whether or not the product is quality.
Country super-group, The Highwomen, released their eponymous debut album on September 6, 2019. The band is made up of Brandi Carlile, Natalie Hemby, Maren Morris and Amanda Shires. The album is filled with cleaver musical hooks, personal songwriting and soaring voices. One of the songs that stood out to me was If She Ever Leaves Me.
Like I said, I love hearing quality music. And a love themed song can really touch the heart if it is written correctly. This one falls into that category for sure. This isn’t just a song about the girl you love. It’s about the ups and downs that can come in any relationship. It’s about the things that made you gravitate to that person in the first place. It’s about knowing there are many possibilities in the future and that splitting is one of those possibilities. But it’s also about letting you know that if that times comes, it won’t be because of you.
The bridge lyrics say:
If she ever leaves, it’s gonna be for a woman with more time
Who’s not afraid to let her dreams come true
If she ever gives her careful heart to somebody new
Well, it won’t be for a cowboy like you
Great songwriting combined with an old school country and western feel give this track almost everything it needs. The last thing that puts it over the top are the vocals. Strong lead from Carlile, full and smooth harmonies right behind the lead. Go pour a few drops of your favorite beverage over a couple of ice cubes, kick back, relax and take this one in. Because this song demonstrates that love, heartache and reaction – are something each and every one of us feel. Human emotions.
