The Jellybricks are getting ready to launch their new album Some Kind Of Lucky on October 4th via Wicked Cool Records – Steven Van Zandt’s label that is releasing all kinds of cool music.
The band has released a couple of singles from the new record. The latest single Corner Of My Eye, DOA and the first single, Brooklyn. I’ve got to tell you, man. I’m INTO all of these. The groove of Corner and the sentimental feel of Brooklyn have me putting those two on repeat. Both of these songs have those 90’s power pop influences that I love to listen to but they also have that special something that doesn’t make them sound dated. They just sound like well crafted songs that you will find yourself humming along to.
The same can be said for DOA. This is the song I want to focus on today. This one completely blew me away. I am a big “harmony” guy. If done correctly, a well thought out harmony will make you lose your place in the song and just sort of float you away, getting lost in them. The Jellybricks are so good on all of these songs I started to think of some other bands that have got it all when it comes to great harmonies.
The first band I thought of was Sloan. If you are into the power pop scene and are a fan of this type of music – you know who Sloan is. The Jellybricks have this sort of thing going on. The second band I thought of was Toad the Wet Sprocket. And not just with the vocals. The guitars that sometimes strum, sometimes have a poppy chug and sometimes give us those picked high strings that have such a melodic feel. The bass lines that run up and down the fret board. Those drums that sit perfectly in the pocket, whose snare has exactly the right amount of “pop” to it.
The next road trip I’m on this fall will include this song being played – many, many times, I’m sure. Go give this one a listen.
