Toni Braxton – Do It

The unmistakable voice.  The legendary vocal tone that has soothed millions of fans.  The delicate but powerful songwriting that you’d expect to find on one of her albums.  It’s all here in the brand new song from Toni Braxton – Do It.  The new single that is gaining momentum with each passing day.  The song has become the highest radio chart debut of Toni Braxton’s career, charting at #13 on the Urban AC radio chart. It’s not hard to see why.  A piano starts the song with Braxton laying down empowering lyrics that intend on giving strength to someone that could possibly need the encouragement, to just let go.

Braxton says, ““I wrote this song about a year ago when a friend was going through the struggles of trying to end a relationship that wasn’t good for her. We have all been through situations like this, when there is really nothing more to say, you know he’s not right and you just need to do what you need to do. There is also an element of hope in the song, that after you do what you need to do things will get better,” explains Toni Braxton.  She continues, “During these unprecedented times, make the most of your time indoors with some self-reflection. Now might be a good time to quarantine your heart as well in order to examine what it really needs.”

Toni Braxton - Do It

The first time I heard Braxton’s voice was in the soundtrack to the Eddie Murphy romcom – Boomerang.  I can still picture Halle Berry’s face in the kitchen when she is absolutely letting Marcus Graham have it for spending the night with Jacqueline, played by Robin Givens.  Love Shoulda Brought You Home was the perfect backdrop for that movie.  Side note: That soundtrack is one of the best ever.  Seriously, go give it a listen.  It’s one of my go to soundtracks.

That next summer, the summer of ’93, the world was officially put on notice with the smash hit, Another Sad Love Song.  That one has always been my personal favorite and I seem to drift away to that time period whenever I hear it.  Braxton went on to release her eponymous debut album followed by Secrets.  All in all she went for three number one songs, six top tens and over sixteen million albums sold during that stretch.  Amazing.  The collaboration with Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds is one of my favorite of its kind.  They are just magic in the studio together.

With her new single, Do It, blazing up the charts, I’m excited to hear what comes next.  I’m hopeful that a full length is right around the corner.  She just recently announced her new label deal with Island Records. So stay tuned for more music reviews.

I’m off to go give this one another listen and then I’m putting on her first record.  Funny how a new song can bring on the memories of the old songs.  When you have a voice like Toni Braxton’s, it’s hard not to get lost in it.
