Phoebe Bridgers – Kyoto
Wednesday night Phoebe Bridgers performed her song “Kyoto” on The Late Late Show with James Corden. “Kyoto” was the second single off of her Grammy nominated album, ‘Punisher’, and a new version of the song is the first single off her ‘Copycat Killer’ EP with musician Rob Moose.
‘Kyoto’ is about Phoebe Bridgers’ parent’s divorce and her relationship with her dad following the divorce. The performance begins with Phoebe singing in bed under somber, blue lighting. The performance evolves into a dream sequence that sees Phoebe performing at Carnegie Hall with Rob Moose playing the violin. By the end of the performance it is revealed that Phoebe Bridgers is performing in front of a green screen.
Phoebe Bridgers said in a press statement about the song:
“This song is about impostor syndrome. About being in Japan for the first time, somewhere I’ve always wanted to go, and playing my music to people who want to hear it, feeling like I’m living someone else’s life. I dissociate when bad things happen to me, but also when good things happen. It can feel like I’m performing what I think I’m supposed to be like.”
Not only is Phoebe Bridger’s album ‘Punisher’ nominated for a Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album, but also the song ‘Kyoto’ has been nominated for two Grammys. One of the nominations is for Best Rock Performance and the other for Best Rock Song.
