The future for Jocelyn & Chris looks to be a bright one. I’m calling it now, in the next several years I expect to see this brother and sister duo on the cover of magazines and appearing on a certain Saturday Night show playing a couple of their tunes.
Here’s the thing. They’ve already accomplished what most bands would consider to be a pinnacle. They’ve played on NBC’s Today Show, played some of the biggest music festivals (SXSW, Summerfest, Sundance) and currently have a top 5 spot on the Billboard AAA Most Added chart. You may be saying to yourself – “Tommy, that’s already a careers’ worth of acclaim.”
You’re right. But that’s how highly I think of their talent. They will keep rising and not rest on some already amazing accomplishments. I think the best is yet to come.
Today, this dynamic duo is premiering the Extra Spice remix version to their Billboard charting – ‘Sugar and Spice’.
I had the chance to catch up with both Jocelyn & Chris to talk about the remix. I asked them about their thought process going into the remix. Chris tells me, “We’ve never really done a remix before but we’ve always wanted to but I’ve never felt like it was the right moment. We realized it would be an awesome way to open up our songwriting to audiences that don’t usually listen to the kind of music we usually would consider ourselves in mind for. So we wanted to get this remixed and we took it as an opportunity to give the song to someone else and let them take it away and see what their brain would do with it.”
This especially interesting to me because Chris carries with him some amazing guitar tone and style. On paper, a remix almost shouldn’t work this well but the outcome is absolutely worth it. The original already had a head bobbing, funk face groove but the remix takes the track a new level of movement.
One of the reasons for song movement are the strong vocals from Jocelyn. She has a unique combination of throwback tone and power but the skill level to take you to places that some of the best modern singers tend to excel at.
Having been blown away by her vocal performance I wondered what people usually say to her after they hear the band perform. Jocelyn says, “It’s funny, I feel like it depends on if they hear me first or see me first. Usually, people that hear me have a throwback, which is cool because we grew up listening to classic rock. So to hear people say stuff like, Hey, you remind me of Janis Joplin! I’m like, oh my God, they said Janis Joplin! But it’s especially funny when we’re at live shows when people see us first, if we’re setting up or something and then we start to sing and then after they’re like, where does it come from?? :laughs: Because I’m like five feet tall and they get a huge kick out of that. That’s one of the great things about music is that you can surprise people in some way.”
I love the thought of that. Music is special in so many ways but the surprise factor of a truly great singer and hearing them for the first time is an underrated treasure. Everyone knows that feeling.
Jocelyn has that gift. She can power you down or lift you up completely with some great head voice runs. Another aspect of their music I love are the vocal harmonies. Both Jocelyn and Chris contributed harmony vocals that pop in and out during the song giving the track space all the while filling up the spectrum nicely.
I’m excited to see where the band goes from here and am expecting big things. I will be keeping a close eye on everything they put out on the future. For now, let’s enjoy the Sugar & Spice remix and dig on that groove.
