James Supercave – Alarm Will Sound

Release Date: January 25, 2019

Over the last couple of years, James Supercave has been a busy, busy group.  In 2014 they released their first single, “Burn,” which claimed ‘Track of the Day’ from L.A. taste-maker KCRW. The following year their debut EP, The Afternoon, sparked great praise and opened the door for James Supercave to play major festivals and tour across the west coast. In support of 2016’s Better Strange, they then hit the road on a national tour, followed by headline slots at local festival staples, and a sold out co-headline west coast tour wrapping up 2017.  They’ve also opened for some heavy hitter like Future Islands, Crystal Castles and Silversun Pickups.  On January 25th, they are back with the new EP, Alarm Will Sound.

This six-song EP (okay, five and a half songs), offers up some good listening experiences.  Each track has a nice result of good production.  I also love the different drum sounds throughout the EP.  It mixes up the sound and the ear never feels fatigued.

Joaquin Pastor’s voice lays perfectly on top of each song.  Some of the vocal effects used really give him a spacey/floaty sound to go along with some really cool melodies.  Keyboardist Patrick Logothetti has many layers going on but somehow they manage to find their own space and make for full but clean songs.  Not to be lost in the shuffle is guitarist Andrés Villalobos.  He picks his spots to come in and grab the spotlight.  A great example is his work on the song, Clued Up.

Pick a song and you might find a favorite.  For me, the song Fools has all the swag you’ll ever need.  This is a great choice for a single.  This has “night driving” written all over it.  Sometimes I find a track or two from an album that I preview and grab a song and put it on my playlist.  This playlist is one I use when I’m driving home from a late night show or poker game and have to drive through downtown Detroit at speeds, at or above, the posted speed limits.  Just kidding, I never drive above the speed limit.

Fools is one of those songs.  Take a listen and I think you might find your own driving-playlist-crasher.  Just keep your head up and stay safe out there.
