The Los Angeles based hard rock solo artist known as SIMA has released a haunting new version of the Madonna classic – Material Girl.
The track is a laid-back but edgy take on the smash hit originality released in 1985, that was included on the monster album by Madonna – ‘Like A Virgin’. SIMA’s version takes a more somber approach and really let’s the listener focus in on her mesmerizing vocal performance.
I also like the subtle nature of the instrumentation. It was like little speckles of glimmer floating around as the back beat of an 808/909 carried the rhythm and gave me a slightly different look than I’m used to with SIMA.
“I decided to cover ‘Material Girl‘ because I loved that song growing up. It was fun listening to and I always loved Madonna’s individuality and creativity and I wanted to create a version that is my own and bring my SIMA sound to it,” she shares. “I loved watching her music videos growing up on MTV and VH1. I wanted to create a different vibe from the original upbeat 80’s song. I wanted to create something darker, captivating with more depth, piano, and keyboard-driven that still have a pop feel to it but also rock and more cinematic. It simple, beautiful, and raw and have elements that I often mix in my own music. ‘Material Girl’ has a sense of empowerment and strength and spirit of a woman that knows what she wants and deserve and she won’t settle for less which is all-powerful and inspiring but it was also important for me to explore our broken society and obsession with Hollywood, money, fame, and power and how often we idolize people simply because of their status.
I felt that Material Girl would be a perfect song to release after releasing ‘Runaways’, ‘Love Is A Battlefield’, ‘The Syndrome’. They all very powerful with a strong message and that touches upon many of the same themes. I’m someone who is rebellious and powerful, walks my own path in life, and believes in love and wants that in my life, but I’m not willing to settle just to be in one that doesn’t uplift, empower and add to my life ”.
SIMA once again shows her true talent as an artist by changing up the game and still leaving the listener wanting to hear more. It’s not always the easiest thing to accomplish.
SIMA continues to impress and I’m here for it all.
