Yard of Blondes – Hummingbird
The Los Angeles based rock band Yard of Blondes are back with their brand new single, Hummingbird. The band has also released an accompanying video for the song. Both are worthy of your ears and eyes.
Inside of the track is the familiar guitar tone that I loved so much the first time I heard them. It’s dark, distorted and seemingly alternatively tuned. In short – it rocks. The drums and bass give this song the backbone & groove and boy does this thing groove. There’s a moment in the second verse, let’s call it the second half of the second verse where the crushing guitar comes back in and musically, everything is right with the world.
Vocally, I love the bands’ sensibilities when it comes to harmonies. Heck, I’ll always lean towards songs that have great harmonies but when you do them in a half step-by-step basis.. even better.
The music video grabbed my attention right away. For me, it was the coloring. It has a retro feel that almost gives it that look of a home movie in 1979 (this is a good thing). It’s pleasing to the eye and gives it sort of a menacing look. I dug all of the jump cuts and quick movements. The video was shot by the bands’ bassist, Fanny. Fanny may have a future in filmmaking in the near future. But quite honestly, she may not need to fall back on that since the band keeps putting out great music like this.
