Album Review: Jackie Cohen – Tacoma Night Terrors Part 1: I’ve Got the Blues

Jackie Cohen

Spacebomb Records has signed artist Jackie Cohen and will release her debut EP on June 29, 2018. Cohen is the latest artist to sign to Spacebomb Records joining a roster that includes Bedouine, Andy Jenkins and more.

Produced by Jonathan Rado, Brian D’Addario, & Michael D’Addario, who also serve as the backing band behind Cohen’s vocals. Jackie Cohen gave us a little taste of what’s to come when she released a teaser of her new music today.

This first EP, ‘Tacoma Night Terrors Part 1: I’ve Got the Blues’, gives us an up close and personal listen to the wonderful tone of Jackie’s voice.

The first song is called ‘Bold’.  It starts with what almost sounds like a 4 track recording with tape hiss and everything that comes along with any type of analog recording.  I don’t consider tape hiss a bad thing.  Especially if you are using it as a part of your artistic expression.  I think it’s bold to start the EP off with it, and I think it’s a move that pays off.  Frankly, it brought me in closer to Jackie’s voice.

The second song, ‘Darlin’, is an absolute highlight for me.   Jackie’s double tracked vocals on the lines “my love” are mesmerizing.  She nails the choruses that would make Dolly Parton grin in appreciation.  The little three second drum shuffles at the end of the choruses are a great drop in for the song.  To be honest, I love everything Jackie and the production team have done here.

‘Maddy’ is the next song on the record.  I really like the vibe on this song.  It has an early 80’s, Motels meets Lana Del Rey type of vibe on it.  While ‘Darlin’ is my favorite song, I feel like ‘Maddy’ should be pushed as a single.  It’s just so damn catchy.

The EP closes with the throwback feel of ‘Ladies Man’.  This song stays true clocking in at 1:37.  Best part for me.. Middle of the song she asks herself a question.  I love the space to give herself time to ponder the answer before going back to the song and it’s ending.

Overall this brief offering leaves me wanting to hear more.  Also leaves me wanting to hear Jackie perform these songs live.  I look forward to both.
