Lauren Sanderson – Don’t Panic

Release date: August 24, 2018 via Epic Records

Lauren Sanderson is legit.  That’s what you need to know.

Her Epic Records release is a six song collection of intense songwriting, clever production and a vocal performance that gives me Nelly Furtado/Lauryn Hill, chills.  From her razor sharp tongue to her soulful vocal patterns, Sanderson is set to show the world what she has to offer.

Originally from Fort Wayne, Indiana, Lauren began her rise as a YouTube inspirational speaker and did TED Talks while she was in high school to parents about accepting your children.  She then started putting all of that energy into songs.

The EP opens up with the “leave me alone” minded Shut Em Up.  She flows through her lines quickly as the beat crushes in a half time tempo.  The second song, Differently, has moments of pop sensibility from Lauren (So let’s talk about it, nobody want to talk about it).  I definitely like it when she is subtle with her vocals in a moment like that.

The third song, Electric, is a sweet song surrounded by some reggae inspired guitar.  Lyrically, I love what I hear.  I was drawn to you.  You inspire me, my muse.  Vocally, Lauren lays down little nuances here and there on the end of words that are just creative little subtleties that show you how special of an artist she is.

The Only One is the gem of this album and the clear single.  Not only did I enjoy this song, I listened to it several times. I found myself singing out loud, probably to the dismay of everyone around me – You hear my phone it go like, la la la la la.  You only call me for that na na na na na.  Say something, something ’bout that blah blah blah blah blah.

Laugh now.  But listen to it.  You’ll be doing it too.

The EP ends with a the soft, acoustic guitar driven tune.  Not sure how long Better Anyways has been around for, but I could see this song being one of those that was played when performing solo with only a guitar.  I think it’s a great chill to end this record.

I expect big things from her and look forward to seeing her rise.  This album is a solid launch toward that ascent.
