It was about two years ago that Carly Shea came onto my radar. It was April of 2020 and she released the song ‘Forever’. I still listen to that song and have been following her career ever since.
Here we are May of 2022 and Shea has a new earworm for fans. ‘Brush It Off’ has that signature chill vibe and hypnotizing vocal melodies that she has become known for. Shea showcases a cool lower register and then seamlessly flows into a really nice falsetto.
‘Brush It Off,’ experiments with an alternative soul and pop soundscape. The single is a product of escapism and the need to be carefree in the face of anxiety.
“I wanted to write a song that is the opposite of how I’ve been feeling; the small problems we fixate on and the bigger existential questions— at some point it becomes too much and you need to exhale. Writing “Brush It Off” was a way to temporarily get out of that headspace and allow myself to feel light and let go.”
After many months of immersing herself in the music of Rochelle Jordan, SWV, Remi Wolf, Steely Dan, and others, Carly spent a year writing songs heavily influenced by the emotional honesty and soulfulness of these artists. “Brush It Off’ is a part of a larger body of work in which Carly’s sound dives deeper into genre bending stories about her ever-changing life in New York.
I love that Carly has such an eclectic musical palette to draw inspiration from but all the while manages to come up with a song that is all her own.
I remain intrigued and am excited to see here she goes from here.
