Concert Review: Rival Sons – Sterling Heights, MI

There’s cool and then there’s swagger.  Rival Sons lead singer, Jay Buchanan oozes both.  He’s an energetic front man that uses his whole body to accentuate what his already soulful voice is saying.  Watching him feels like you’re watching a cross between Ian Astbury and Jim Morrison.  Yep.  That cool.

I’m sure it helps the ole confidence being surrounded by a band of incredible musicians that all exude the same swagger in their own way.  They have a knack for working off of each other and giving the fans so much to watch on stage.

Whether it’s set opener, the powerful, Back in the Woods or the acoustic, stripped down Where I’ve Been – these guys are a must see show.  And the crowd at the Michigan Lottery Amphitheater at Freedom Hill let their appreciation be known.  The applause seemed to go on forever when the band would finish a song.

Maybe it was the thick and dirty tone of Scott Holiday’s guitar.  Perhaps it was the precise harmonies and low bottom end growl of bassist Dave Beste.  Could be it was drummer Mike Miley living inside the pocket and keeping the rhythm moving along.  Or maybe it was Todd Ogren filling out the sound in so many ways, behind the wall of leaves and white rabbit. (see below) All I know is that the people in attendance couldn’t get enough and although the set was and hour and fifteen minutes, everyone in the place wanted to hear more after they ended the set with Do Your Worst.

I have been a fan of their music for a while now but this was my first concert experience, seeing them live.  I’m already watching out for when they roll back through Detroit because I will certainly be there to help cheer them on.
