Interview: Adam Masterson

Adam Masterson – Delayed Fuse

January 10, 2020 – Adam Masterson has a great way of telling a story.  To be honest, his signature voice could pretty much tell any story and keep the listener engaged.  But Adam has been blessed with both traits.  He’s getting ready to release his new E.P. – Delayed Fuse this spring.  He’s put out a couple of singles so far and his fans have not been disappointed.

The first song I heard by him was Bad Luck Baby.  I loved its upbeat sound and energy.  It definitely made me want to hear more.  The next song on Delayed Fuse was one that Adam Masterson and I talked a lot about.  Avenue Walk has a great sound and some really cool visuals in the video.  I was surprised to learn that it was first shot not really to be the video (he’ll explain) and everything that happened was spontaneous.  Adam tells Sound Vapors, “We originally went back to Clarendon Road, where I used to live.  We walked down to this little spot I used to walk.  Like down to Clarendon Cross.  It was kind of odd because we wanted to do a test idea and we did with an iPhone for the video.  To make sort of a vision board of ideas we could maybe create for the song.  And that’s what the video is.  We were walking around, just the two of us.  We looked at it and said, this is the music video.”

Adam continues, “For me it was great because I felt that is me as well.  That’s how I felt then and that’s how I look like now.  That’s just me wearing what I was wearing that day.  Singing the song in the streets where I wrote the song, where I used to live – where I felt the whole sentiment of the song.  It’s got a personal, natural feel to it.”  When we dove deeper into the spontaneity of the video Adam remarked, “I do know a lot of people around there because I used to play in all the bars and I lived there for many years and have got a lot of friendships.  I would see people and they wouldn’t see Anna with the phone.  So I’m saying hello to people and it felt natural.  The fella that I’m saying hello to, outside of the Mau Mau Bar, Tommy Kennedy, he’s the promoter of the Mau Mau Bar.  I’ve known him for years and he just happened to be standing there.  I waved to him and said hello.  I don’t think he even knows he’s in the video.  I should tell him. :laughs:”

No wonder the video has such an organic feel.  I love seeing all of the visuals during his walk-about.  Even though he said that him and Anna were only testing out ideas while they did this, there is something very artistic about it.  Like the creative way Adam writes songs, Anna just has that film eye.  I love the framing in the video.  You get to focus on Adam but still take in everything else going on around the avenue.  Simply put, this isn’t just a guy walking around being boringly placed in the center of a video.  This is shot in a cool way to express the song, Adam and the background.  Great job all around on this.  I’m definitely a fan of both of their talents.

We also talked about the possibility of Masterson touring this new record and he gives us the scoop on that during the interview.  I’m hopeful that he’s able to route touring to the Detroit area.  It would be awesome to hear these songs in a live setting.  You can hear my entire conversation with Adam Masterson by clicking on one of the links below to your favorite place to listen to podcasts.
