Interview: Jessie Clement

Jessie Clement is on the verge of something big.  She does the little things that make this world a better place.  But being genuinely kind and courteous to one another on a daily basis would possibly be the biggest thing that could happen in today’s world.  Her innate humanity is something that many people strive to get better at.  Some people do it because they feel a desire inside of them.  Some people do it for the sake of a camera and a social app.  With Jessie, it just comes natural.  Oh, did I mention that she a remarkable voice and a passion for writing songs?

Jessie has a calling for being there for people in need – both in song and in person.  Before we even officially started the interview and started talking about music, I asked her how her Thanksgiving Holiday was and she went on to tell me how they “always look different”.  Intrigued, I pushed for more information.  She tells me, “My parents are super generous people.  They love reaching out to people that don’t really have any family for Thanksgiving or anywhere to go.  So we always have at least one couple or a couple of people over.  It makes for such fun get to know you time”

Seems like such a solid foundation (and great parents) and for someone with the gift of composing, it also sounds like a great way to express how events like these can impact you, personally.  When I asked her about the future she says, “Making music that I’m passionate about.  Growing in that and growing in areas that scare me.  I feel like I have something to offer.  For the first time in my life I felt like I had something to offer.  I care so much about people.  To a fault sometimes.  But I just want to help somebody, however I can, get through something.  You know, learn what it feels like to not be the victim of a situation – to stand up for themselves and take back what they might have lost.  And all that I can do is to make music that is real and honest and vulnerable and from the heart so that people don’t feel so alone anymore.  That’s what I’m dedicated to.”  Words of wisdom for this twenty year old singer-songwriter.

Hearing her speak so passionately about her vision is inspiring.  But I cannot tell a lie.  Hearing her sing the songs that she has written can be just as inspiring.  The first song from her album, Slow Motion Philosophies, that is due out on February 14th, is Borrowed and Blue.  My ears perked up immediately when I first heard this song.  I was floored by her vocal delivery and the John Mayer-esque production.  It was apparent right away that this project was something that I was going to be into.  She has the singer-songwriter spirit but those little movements with her voice throw off an early R&B vibe as well.  My favorite part?  Well after you give this one a full listen-through, go immediately to 2:42.  So turn the page…  That brief change in the song right there is a nice piece of songwriting and is that thing that keeps me coming back for more.

It’s so obvious that after speaking with Jessie Clement that she is destined for something big.  I would not be shocked if her music is one of those things making a difference.  She already has the foundation.  Now it’s time for the world to hear what she has to offer.

Jessie and I also got into the production of the album and also the backstory of how she began working with producers Russell Terrell (Brooks & Dunn, Eric Church, Thomas Rhett) and Brad Hill (Maren Morris, Brothers Osborne, Lucie Silvas).  You can hear this as well as my entire, super fun conversation with Jessie, by clicking on one of the links below to your favorite place to listen to podcasts.

You will not be disappointed, my friends.  This was one of my favorite conversations of the year!
