Interview: KT Tunstall

KT Tunstall has accomplished a great deal in the music world.  She has hit songs and platinum records on her resume.  She’s played and headlined some of the biggest music festivals in the world.  A Brit Award, Grammy nomination and an iconic voice that has graced the soundtracks of various Hollywood films.  You can add health awareness advocate, charity supporter and all around good person to that already impressive list.  Okay.. those are probably already on there but you get my point!

When we spoke on the phone, KT is as charming as she is funny.  She has a great sense of humor and has a cool way of telling a story.  I’ll let you listen to the podcast to hear an incredible memory that includes, Stevie Nicks, Vanessa Carlton and Wembley Stadium.  Not a bad combination, right?

Her current release Wash Ya Hands (you can read about it HERE) is an upbeat song that is one part musical, one part dance-able, one part health aware and another part charitable.  The finished product is one of those tracks you have to listen to again and again.  In short, it’s the perfect combination.

I asked Tunstall how this idea of releasing a song and asking fans to participate in a video came about.  Tunstall tells Sound Vapors, “It was born from a couple of really amazing female director friends of mine who were going to do a short music promo for the U.N. (United Nations).  The U.N. were going to put together some kind of informational video for people and it just never quite happened.  All of the parts didn’t happen.  But as soon as they asked me to do it, I basically had this flash of knowing exactly the vibe I wanted for this song.”

Tunstall continues, “The vibe that I wanted was.. Do you remember that amazing Fat By Slim video?  Where they were all dancing in the mall.  I think it’s “Praise You” and it’s just this kind of really, ridiculous, homemade D.I.Y. video but the music just means that you can’t not dance to it.  That’s kind of the vibe I wanted for it.”

This being such a rare and unprecedented moment our lifetimes (Covid19), it almost seems like, a reminder to do such a simple thing like washing your hands to help avoid the spread of the virus is just what we need at this point and time.  Tunstall has found a fun way to get everyone in the mood to dance and wash up.

Tunstalls says, “I think we’ve been in this very focused way of thinking about of what we have to do to stay safe and there hasn’t been a lot of distraction.  Even I’m finding.. I just went to the cash machine and forgot to put my mask on!  Like it says in the song, it just takes a little bit of tweak in our behaviors.  We’ve just got to do a little change and remember these things.  And whenever you hear a song that is a total ear worm, it just sticks in your head.  So, I guess I was just hoping that it would be kind of be a useful ear worm.”

KT not only intends to bring along a helpful reminder to everyone, she’s also hoping to make a difference by partnering with a couple of charities.  Tunstall is launching her new song + video for “Wash Ya Hands” to not only help get the word out to remind people to wash their hands but also to raise money for some great causes that are supporting children effected by the Covid19 pandemic as well as encouraging and educating people about the positive effect of properly washing their hands.  This includes portable hand washing stations.  Go to Warchild.org & WaterAid.org for more information.
