On October 11, 2019 – Beware Of Darkness released their first single in more than three years. The new song ‘Bloodlines’ is fierce in guitar tone like some of band’s previous work – Muthafucka comes to mind. It’s mindful and mind-opening like Amen Amen. It’s pure Kyle Nicolaides.
Or is it?
Before we go there. The sound of this song is strong and part of that strength is talent that worked on this thing. Bloodlines was recorded in Los Angeles at Kingsize Sound Labs with producer Braden Merrick and mixed by David Sardy (LCD Soundsystem, Nine Inch Nails, Rage Against The Machine). In addition to multi-instrumentalist Kyle Nicolaides, the track boasts special guests guitarist Jeff Schroeder (Smashing Pumpkins), bassist Mark Stoermer (The Killers) and drummer Jon Safley (CRX, Bleached). I Rest.
When I first got Kyle Nicolaides on the phone for our interview, I was exited to talk about the new song and his metallic-fuzzy guitar tone. Don’t worry, we got there too. But before we broke down the song, Kyle talked about the journey from the band’s first album, Orthodox to the last album, Are You Real? He told me about his battle with depression and everything that comes along with that. Things like suicidal thoughts, self medicating, hating something that you’ve loved all your life and the stigma that seems to be all too common in our society. All of these things and more, like a trip to Iowaska, has helped shape the way Kyle is going to make music moving forward.
Not only was it an eye opening conversation, it was one of the more important interviews I’ve conducted. Today, Kyle is in a good place and I get the feeling he’s found his purpose in life. If making music for people is part of that purpose, therapeutic for him and there’s any chance that a song can truly help someone in distress, then I think he’s definitely on the right track.
