New Listen: Third Eye Blind – Screamer (Single)

Every week we take a song from an upcoming album and talk about it.  Third Eye Blind is set to release their new album on October 18th.  The name of the album and the name of the song we are previewing today are one in the same: Screamer. This song features Alexis Krauss and is the first song on Third Eye Blind’s new album.

Straight away I liked the cadence to this song.  It starts off with some well timed screams from Krauss, assisted by a reverse organ loop and some peppy synths.  But then the the fuzzy bottom end from bassist Alex LeCavalier along with singer Stephan Jenkins voice takes over, setting the song in motion.  I especially liked the harmony vocal on the word “Screamer”.

Brad Hargreaves provides some amazingly mixed toms to keep that cadence going throughout the verses.  In fact, I really dug the entire drum track.  Another aspect that should not go overlooked is the completely full sound that really comes from guitarist Kryz Reid and keyboardist/guitarist Colin CreeV.  Their sound goes a long way ensuring the song does not lull or feel thin.  Right after Krauss sings a second run of screams, the song take a subtle take on the chorus and I really have come to love the background music/noise.

Now nothing will ever top The Red Summer Run for me – That’s a song I would and have put on repeat and have just driven in the summer sun with – but the sonic qualities of Screamer makes it a song that I will definitely keep coming back to.  This new album has been anxiously awaited by fans of the band and by the sound of the singles so far, I would say that these last four years will have been worth the wait.
