Interview: Loose Buttons – Eric Nizgretsky

Loose Buttons front man, Eric Nizgretsky, has so much passion about, not only music but his band mates as well, it’s hard not to be inspired.  Eric speaks in such an endearing way when we talk about the lyrical content of songs like Something Better and Home Movies.  He embraces the relationships he has with his crew that includes everyone in the band.  He speaks fondly of the conversation that him and Ava Trilling re-created from a Pink Floyd song that found a home in the song 6:17.

In fact, lead singer Eric Nizgretsky and guitarist Zachary Kantor are lifelong friends who wrote their first songs together at 11 years old, with Nizgretsky’s randomly-assigned college roommate Manny Silverstein (bass) and their former battle of the bands rival Adam Holtzberg (drums) rounding out the group along the way. On Something Better, they’re joined by fellow New York musicians like Oberg and Ava Trilling of Forth Wanderers, who duets with Nizgretsky on the album’s Fell Into A Hole.

I asked Eric about the lyrical themes of the album, as I picked up on, what seem to be painful memories but also the learning process that comes with such things.  Eric tells Sound Vapors, “100% there’s a theme to it.  That theme is family and my understanding of how to process that family.  I think my parents relationship has such a profound effect on me.  They’re two of my best friends but they hate each other.  So I think the way that I process that.. I never want to have that sort of hatred, that sort of relationship with my family, that I was sort of able to curate.”  Like many of us that come from a broken home – I get exactly what he means.  No wonder his #crew is so important to him.

The band also just came off of a sold out show at The Dance in New York, where the room busted out over capacity (shhh) as 500+ people showed their support and sang along.  Eric tells me, “Yeah it’s crazy, the venue was already closing down and they were kind of letting people in.  It’s crazy to say but there was a line around the block.  It’s only really a 250 capacity room and there was like 500 people there or something like that.”

Eric continues, “It’s surreal.  For us, we make music as four best friends but then when you go on stage and see that it’s completely crammed and people are singing the words that I wrote.. I mean.. that’s crazy to me.  It was a pinch me moment.. it was amazing.”  You can hear the sincerity and honest to goodness joy in his voice when speaking about that night.

We spoke at length about the members in the band but I didn’t want to use quotes in this article.  It just wouldn’t demonstrate the admiration he has for the other three members in the band.  So I say – go listen this the podcast and hear for yourself.  It’s pretty inspiring stuff.
