Emily White has spent a big portion of her life in the music industry. You could even say she’s dedicated herself into helping many musicians and artists realize their dreams. Trust me, she’s not your average, ordinary entertainment executive that only looks at the bottom line. Just like any entrepreneur, she knows the importance of having a good business acumen. In addition to this, Emily is seriously interested in making that road to success as simple as possible. She’ll be the first to tell you that this information is out there. However, what she’s done is organize the information in a way that is easy to follow and in a way that makes sense.
White, who is the founder of Collective Entertainment, a talent management and consulting firm based in New York and Los Angeles, recently published this information in a new book. ‘How To Build A Sustainable Music Career & Collect All Revenue Streams’ is available now through places like Amazon and the company website – Collective Entertainment. It’s more than just a ‘how to” book, though. I would say it is a blueprint of what every artist should be mapping out as they begin to navigate through what can be a complex and challenging industry. But this is not just a beginners guide. People at all levels may be able to gain insight from this book. From the band just starting out, all the way to an established artist. Talent managers who are charged with making sure their artists are getting everything they are entitled to. There are many other facets outside of the actual music that goes into the plan of a successful project and this book points out many that may or may not seem obvious.
Emily tells Sound Vapors, “The information in my book is out there but I’ve never seen it put out in order – from recording to release or creation to execution. The music industry, back in the day, in the pre-digital era was set up to confuse artists. So basically, I’ll look into the audience at SXSW (South by Southwest) and I’ll see artists often spending a lot of money to be at these conferences and they’re furiously taking notes and they’re literally grasping at little nuggets of information. You know, this is what Sound Exchange is. This is how I should handle PR. I just felt like it was totally out of order.”
Emily continues, “I didn’t feel there was a step by step guide out there. Also, it was information that musicians always wanted from me. I’m originally from Milwaukee and I don’t even need to post that I’m in Wisconsin. It can just be Thanksgiving or something and I’ll have local musicians wanting to get coffee to pick my brain. I just felt like you shouldn’t have to know me to have access to this information.” See what I mean? Making that road as simple as possible and getting access to valuable information to the masses. The data in this book is easily worth it at ten times the price. Seriously.
In addition to writing her second book and running Collective Entertainment day to day, Emily White has also launched the #iVoted initiative. White explains what it’s all about. She says, “I have a non-profit called #iVoted where we activate venues to let fans in on national election nights who show a selfie from outside of their polling place. We were in over 150 venues and 37 states for the 2018 midterms and we’re gearing up for November 3, 2020. So if you’re interested in playing you can email info@c-ent.com. If you’re an industry person all we ask is that you tell one colleague or friend!” As Emily would tell you, she’s doing a lot of work on voter turnout.
