Kurt Cobain 1967-1994

Kurt Cobain has been gone nearly a quarter century and his name still resonates today.  He’s still referenced in pop culture, movies and songs.  Sometimes I let my mind go down that rabbit hole and think what would have become of him and Nirvana had he not taken his own life (or had his life taken – another argument for another day).  Of course there are more things at stake when I really start to let my mind wander.  I wonder if Nirvana would’ve put out another album?  What would a solo Cobain album have sounded like?  Would Dave Grohl put together Foo Fighters?  If he did, would it be the same juggernaut that it is today?  Would I have a killer documentary like Sound City watch whenever the mood strikes?

Or would Nirvana keep putting out albums and watch sales become less and less with every release, like they tend to do?  I guess maybe that’s some of the appeal.  We wonder what might have become.  It’s not like Nirvana wasn’t one of the biggest bands in the world.  I do wonder, though.  With the way tours are put together these days I wonder how much even bigger they could have become.  Like The Foo’s playing Wembley (go watch Back and Forth).  The sky truly seemed like the limit.  But maybe they would’ve kept putting out albums and become sort of like Green Day.  What I mean by that is if Green Day ceased to exist after American Idiot.. well you know what I’m getting at.

Being a fan, of course, I wanted and still want more.  ‘You Know You’re Right’ made me wonder what the next record would’ve sounded like.  I’d like to think he would’ve evolved like great artists do.  But we still have the masterpieces that are available to us and I am grateful for that just like any music fan should be.  So I guess I’ll save the rabbit hole journey for another day and listen to ‘In Utero’.   R.I.P. The music lives.
