New Listen: Bombay Bicycle Club – Everything Else Has Gone Wrong

Bombay Bicycle Club – Everything Else Has Gone Wrong

On January 17, 2020, Bombay Bicycle Club released their first new album in six years.  When the band announced they were taking a hiatus in 2016, many fans wondered if they would ever come back together and record new music.  They also wondered that if a reunion was to be, would the wait be worth it?

Today we answer that question in the form of the title track.

As soon as the bass started, I was in.  I love a fuzzy bass but when the song grows, five seconds in, they come at you with drums and guitar and you know you’re in for a treat.  It was at this point I felt like I was hearing the trailer music for the new Jason Bourne film.  It just seems to grab the listener without being over the top and the groove locks you in.

Jack Steadman’s cadence moves swiftly in the verses but you never seem to get lost.  It’s sort of addicting, to be honest.  If there’s anything I love better than fuzzy bass it’s the sound of a great harmony.  Normally, you think of
harmonies with long vocal phrases but the quickness and expertly tracked layers of his voice are mind arousing.

About half way through the song, the outro begins.  It’s almost like a fresh start to the song but it starts to build and by the time they go full on Hungry Like The Wolf (raise your hand if you love the sound of that synth) the song is back in full swing.  I love what they’ve done here, to end the song.  It’s one of those moments where I can imagine the crowd at a Bombay Bicycle Club show elevating higher and higher with each jump.

If need more and want to put the song into full perspective, I highly recommend going straight to the video.  With attention spans as short as they are in today’s world (guilty), I never lost interest.  In fact, I wanted to see where we ended up.  I leave it up to you to take that journey.

So here we are and a brand new album has been released.  The first one in six years.  Was it worth the wait?  You better believe it.  And yes, the band seems to have found their second wind.
