New Listen: Freja The Dragon – Long Gone Girl

Introducing Freja the Dragon and the Long Gone Girl EP

Review by Jessica Frey

If you are like me, you love to be introduced to new music.  If you haven’t been exposed to these songs yet, then we have a new and exciting artist we would like to introduce you to.  We think you’ll be happy to get to know about this singer/songwriter and producer Freja Drakenberg from Stockholm as she has released her debut EP as her alter ego, Freja The Dragon, on May 8th. The songs are sad songs but they are far from downers. Each song, pulling from a different phase of sadness, is beautiful and particularly mesmerizing, unique unto itself.  If you’re already a fan then you know what she has in store.

Drakenberg is a talented singer and multi-instrumentalist trained at the prestigious Royal College of Music in Stockholm.  Drakenberg started out as an assistant engineer to producer Peter Bjorn and John and LIV member Björn Yttling (Lykke Li, Chrissie Hynde, Primal Scream) out of college. Shortly after, she joined Peter Bjorn and John as a multi-instrumentalist on the band’s Breakin’ Point world tour. The next step in her career led her to work directly with Peter Bjorn to write the Long Gone Girl EP.

Freja the Dragon has made her debut as a highly talented musician. Her voice is entrancing and addictive. I find myself impressed that this is only her first EP as it is very professional and well put together.  It would seem as though she has been doing this for ages.

The six song EP starts out with the EP’s title track “Long Gone Girl”.  This song is soft and haunting with a slightly upbeat tempo almost tricking you into forgetting that this song is about parting ways and giving up. The song, “Cut Me Loose” is a slightly more upbeat song that is sad but spirited. My personal favorite off this EP is “Tell Me I’m Wrong” as I feel a slight draw from the likes of Tori Amos but, this song is different enough to stand on its own.  The piano in the song plays so well with the beautiful chorus and Freja the Dragon’s voice making the song feel beguiling and full of ease.

I’m looking forward to hearing where Freja the Dragon takes us next with more music. Her beautiful voice would seem to work well in just about any situation.  I could see her making guest appearances on other artists songs or creating something entirely different and still sounding great.  For now, we have the Long Gone Girl EP to introduce us to Freja the Dragon leaving us to hope we get to hear more in the future.
