Grace VanderWaal – Today and Tomorrow

Grace VanderWaal continues to shine and amaze.  This time around it wasn’t the production or slick beats that had me drawn into the song.  It was a simple ukulele and her breathy and almost haunting voice that captured my attention.  It’s nearly hard to believe but she seems to be gaining more control over her voice with every release.  Those little noodles are so well placed, I don’t think they’re intentional at this point.  I think they are so natural to Grace, they’ve become second nature.  In fact, the whole vocal seems so relaxed and natural that there’s an element of an unrehearsed, spontaneous performance that only great vocalists can achieve.  I’m only speculating here, but it’s almost as if she walked into the studio and laid this down in one or two takes.  Whatever the case – she nailed it.

Lyrically, there are signs of a mature point of view that is cooled with a young innocence that cannot be contrived.  Only space that is lived in.  Possibly the greatest example of this is in the final verse of Today and Tomorrow:

One day I’ll be old and ugly
Will you still be thinking of me?
If we were as brave as we are now

It’s a great verse from a fine writer and a great vocal from a talented singer.  She really has it all doesn’t she?  Not to mention the fact that this track is from the upcoming film, Disney’s Stargirl – of which she is staring in.  Not a bad song from a budding actress.  She really does have it all.
