Kevin Rudolf has spent his 2020 writing, recording, mixing and releasing music. As a fan of his particular brand of music, this makes me very happy. Like many of of his fans, I’ve been keep tabs on him through his socials and YouTube channel (Look below for those links).
When I spoke to Kevin a couple of months ago we talked about him continually writing and recording. He loves music and throws himself deep into any project he is working on. Another fruit of that labor came out on August 28th in the form of “Are We Having Fun?”
I reached out to Kevin again and asked him if he could describe the inspiration behind the song. Rudolf says, “I wrote Are We Having Fun? at the beginning of the pandemic. The world seemed to be shutting down, people were forced to be at home and perhaps forced to face themselves. Many of the distractions, good and bad, were taken away and I kept thinking…are we having fun yet? What does it take to be happy? Isn’t it enough to just be alive?”
It’s a pretty interesting thought and an important question to ask ourselves.
Kevin Rudolf puts this message to work in the song and features some his signature guitar sound. With the main riff staying close to the center, Rudolf pans a couple of busy and important guitar pieces left and right. It really makes the sound feel extra wide and audibly simulating. In addition to a solid back beat highlighted with a nice rim shot that serves as almost the hi-hat-like time keeper.
Vocally, Rudolf keeps a nice harmony throughout most of the song and his melody-line has a comforting familiarity to it. A nice outro to the song asks in a voice that appears to be in your face: “Are we having fun?”
