New Listen: Miranda Lambert – Tequila Does

Miranda Lambert released her new album, Wildcard, on  November 1, 2019.  The album, produced by Jay Joyce (Carrie Underwood, Zac Brown Band, Eric Church) is a fourteen track record that mixes the unforgettable sound of Lambert’s voice with ultra high level musicianship and production.

My pick for the new listen is song number twelve on the album.  For me, I love focusing in on a track that not only stood out to me but made me think about listening for those little nuances I heard the first time through.  Tequila Does – did that for me and more.

I love a great cohesive story line in a song.  It almost seems like this is a dying art form.  I preview a ton of material that is vague in it’s approach or just flat out reaches for weirdness.. just to be weird.  Don’t get me wrong, I can get deeply into that stuff as well.  But sometimes you just want to envision a story that you can follow.  Tequila Does, is a back to basics type of song that explores the lack of passion that exists when the ‘boys don’t measure up to the Tequila waiting at home. Miranda Lambert’s run down of brands in the song is an added bonus to the songs appeal and creativity.

Musically, the song has everything going for it.  Lambert’s voice is as throwback as ever and it’s refreshing to hear Miranda’s old school vocal style, in a time when it seems everyone is chasing crossover appeal.  The time signature changes between the verse and chorus is sonic gold.  My ears perked up at each change.  The chorus still retains that old school country flavor I mentioned but the sound fills up and is super soothing.

Finally, Lambert’s sigh at 2:17 right before the last verse gives off a great visual.  An exasperated feeling exudes from that one breath.  The song’s an A+ for me.
