On October 18, 2019 – The Magpie Salute will release the follow up to their highly acclaimed High Water I with High Water II. The former was one of my favorite albums of 2018 and was included in the Sound Vapors Top Ten year end list. I’ll no doubt be putting more than a few words together about this newest release, in the near future.
Today, however, I want to talk about a three song EP that the band released on September 6th called ‘In Here’. Two of the three songs on it will be included on II. ‘In Here’ and ‘Lost Boy’, which features contributions from Alison Krauss (vocals, fiddle). The third song, Passenger will not be on the the full length. Instead it was included on this EP – making it a special and sort of limited release.
Turns out that it may be one of my favorite Magpie Salute songs ever recorded. It’s like John Lennon and Jeff Tweedy had a baby and Rich Robinson and John Hogg raised and nurtured it. This song has everything going for it. Great songwriting, great mix, strong instrumentation and subtle but still powerful vocals. Not that I would expect anything less from this group of talented and seasoned pro’s.
Passenger has me excited all over again, just like I was last year when they released High Water I. Go check this one out and give it a full listen. The song ends just like its supposed to. A nice slow-down in time and a defined stop for everything, except the guitar. Brilliant.
