Kiefer Sutherland has a couple of passions in his life – Acting and music.  One thing that ties these passions together is conveying a story to an audience.  Sometimes it’s how you say something and sometimes it’s what you say that gets your point across.  Sutherland is great at both.  He uses his distinctive, sometimes gravelly voice and engages in a ten song storytelling session.

The Reckless & Me album begins with the spacious Open Road. A nice acoustic guitar kicks off a story of being on the road and an 18-wheeler being the most familiar thing around.  Sutherland also impresses with his vocal ability.  The vocals are powerful but also there are some nice vocal breaks mixed in.

The next couple of songs, Something You Love and Faded Pair Of Blue Jeans, really had me thinking about the production value of this album.  Sutherland has surrounded himself with a group of talented musicians and production team.  Producer Judy Cole really does a great job of letting Sutherland tell a story all the while helping the songs stimulate the ears with terrific musical accompaniment.

The first of my favorite two tracks on the album is the slow-driving but powerful Reckless.  And by slow driving but powerful I mean to equate that to a locomotive slowly howling down the railroad with great might.  I love everything about this song.  The organ that starts the song.  The drums and incredible snare drums that sets the pace.  The guitars, both the slide guitar and the over-driven tube amplifier warmness that is the main guitar during the song.  He sets this song up with a journey that has an outcome that is a little bit unknown to the listener.  Great job on this song.

The second of my personal favorites is This Is How It’s Done.  This is a song that would leave The Tennessee Three smiling all day long.  Bar fights and whiskey – what more do you need?  How about the line, “If you insist on fighting, well you may be sorry, son.  ‘Cause you’re messing with a veteran.. of kicking ass for fun.”  I believe him and I’ll take my whiskey, thank you.

The next two songs have some great things going for them.  The sing-along worthy Agave has my favorite harmonies on the album, during the chorus, that will have fans attending shows singing the words with Sutherland.  Run To Him has a nice Memphis feel to it and will have you groovin’ in your seat.  Take the time to listen to this track.

The album finishes with two very personal sounding songs.  The first one Saskatchewan, is one of the best stories that Sutherland tells on an album that is full of great tales.  He talks about going back to his Mother’s little town that she called home to pay his last respects and say goodbye.  It’s an emotional song that I felt close to during the many times I listened to it.

He completes the album with Song For A Daughter.  Sutherland talks about being a proud Father and letting go, when that inevitable times comes.  I thought it was a great way to end the album and I think he let’s us in on another one of his passions: Family.
