Lily & Madeleine – Canterbury Girls

Release Date: February 22, 2019 via New West Records

We’ve been watching sisters, Lily and Madeleine grow up right before our eyes.  If you’re a fan, then you already know about their hypnotizing vocal melodies.  But their new album, Canterbury Girls, takes those melodies to another level.  There is a clear jump in production and maturity on this album.

You still get those familiar piano driven tunes like the opening track, Self Care or Bruises, but now they feel much larger.  More refined.  The vocals on these songs are among my very favorite on the entire album.  Speaking of favorites, my absolute is Supernatural Sadness.  It gives me the urge to vibe out at my favorite summer spot and just take it all in.  I love the mix of a sort of “Off The Wall, MJ” blended with the essence of artists of today like HAIM and Bruno Mars as well as that soft but fat snare that keeps this song in check.  It’s actually now my favorite song by the duo, barely overtaking Westfield from the Keep It Together album.  Okay.. it’s like a 1 and 1A situation.

A terrific choice for a single is the super catchy, Can’t Help The Way I Feel.  I love the retro feel here but not in the obvious way.  Sure, it has that Nowhere To Run, Nowhere To Hide, soul to it but it also has a Revolver and more specifically Tomorrow Never Knows personality to it.

Another gem on this record is Analog Love.  It has a reflective mood, especially those guitars, both acoustic and electric.  With summer feeling so far away, this song has me dreaming about those warm days listening to this song as a back drop to the sunny season.  The album closes with the haunting piano dominated song, Go.  Just as haunting are the lyrics on what seems like a very personal song.  It’s 5 o’clock and I’m drinking and later in the song they circle back to this stanza with, now it’s 2am and I’m thinking.

The album produced by Daniel Tashian and Ian Fitchuk, has such a nice flow to it, everyone involved in the production process really has something to be proud of here.  I love records that have good sonic quality to them and Canterbury Girls has this and more.  I recommend you taking a listen and losing yourself for a half hour or so and enjoying this record.
