Interview: JJ Wilde

JJ Wilde has a new record out.  It’s called Wilde Eyes, Steady Hands.  Not only is it a well written – expertly executed album, Wilde delivers a vocal performance worthy of very high praise.  In fact, it’s her vocal tone that sets this record off, on the first track – Wired.  The album doesn’t stall as you are met with a Rush of adrenaline.  The second song The Rush, which has exploded on Spotify, comes at you with a combination of aggression, reflection and fist full of swag all at once.  State Of Mind is part throwback-feel to my favorite musical decade the 90’s mixed with those modern hooks and really gives Wilde’s crazy and exciting life some perspective.  The album closes with Gave It All.  I mentioned to Wilde that this song contains my favorite moment on the entire record.  I gave my life just to please you – is the moment Wilde goes up in her upper register of her voice and beautifully expands the sound of the song.  It’s a great moment.

Wilde explains to Sound Vapors how Gave It All came to be, “It was a very intimate writing process.  It was just me and a guitar and I was at a very fragile state when I wrote that.  The song is honestly just pure emotion with me getting over something and that was my therapeutic way of getting over it was putting into a song.  So going there to a very vulnerable place, there was no thought process, that song just came out.”

Wilde just finished up a tour with The Struts and now is about to head back out on the road with Incubus for a few dates and then for a run with Reignwolf.  She has already made some solid memories that will last a lifetime but she is only getting started.  Trust me, in speaking with her, Wilde is motivated and passionate about the music she creates and playing live is extremely important to her.  Make sure to catch her and her band’s live show when they come to your city.  We spoke at length about touring and some of her favorite things about it.

There’s already been comparisons made to other great artists but the person Wilde reminds me of not only in vocal tones but also in songwriting is Johnette Napolitano from Concrete Blonde.  Wilde has one of those unique and powerful voices.  You can hear our entire conversation about it on the Sound Vapors Podcast listed below.
