New York, NY – Every once in a while I will go on a quest. Something will enter my head space and I will try my best to research, learn everything I can about it and talk to someone that knows about the subject. I’ve done this very thing with bands, albums, producers, etc. This rabbit hole started with me standing at the top of it listening to albums that had what I call that sweet-spot sound. After listening to many different records (in many different genres) I decided I needed to visit a studio that had the Trident mixing console in use.
As luck would have it, I was headed to New York for a completely different project when I found a studio in midtown Manhattan that had one of these things. The console they have is a 65 Series Trident. So I reach out and set up a time to come in and sit down with the studio’s co-owner, Roman Molino Dunn. This is usually where the rabbit hole ends on these journeys and I come out satisfied with my quest. But no, no, no dear readers, this one is far from over.
Roman wears many hats in the studio. Co-owner, Mixing Engineer, Mastering Engineer, Musician and all around nice guy. Another thing Roman Molino Dunn excels at is being a Producer. He does that with the moniker – Electropoint. His latest success? The Adam Barta and Lovari track that just went #1 on the Billboard Breakout Chart and #47 on the Billboard Dance Chart – ‘No Day Like Today’. Oh and he got a feature credit on the song as well. Not too shabby, eh?
In fact, the rabbit hole went so deep, I didn’t spend the whole time talking about the board. Although, we did have a nice chat about the history of these types of boards and some of the artists that have recorded on them. We also talked about one of my favorite things about the board.. that sweet sound of analog recording. The Trident is known for its pre-amps and warm sound. I could spend a day and a half talking about that stuff but honestly, there’s so many great things going on with Roman and his studio I was thrilled to talk about it and tried to take it all in.
So instead of trying to write everything we talked about, I’ll refer you to the podcast we recorded in the studio that day. Our conversation went nearly an hour and a half! Click on one of the links below to your favorite place to listen to podcasts and get ready to unconsciously learn something. Roman has a lot of knowledge to share.
Now.. sit back, enjoy and follow the white rabbit.
