New Video: Grace VanderWaal – I Don’t Like You

On October 18th, Grace VanderWaal released her brand new single ‘I Don’t Like You‘ to the world.  Today, she launches the video for that song.  In that “New Listen” review I wrote:

I Don’t Like You explores that thing that nearly everyone in a relationship has considered at one point.  I love you, but I don’t like you.  Though it may not always end in separation, sometimes those heated moments can cause even the strongest partnerships to go through a period of I just don’t like you right now.  VanderWaal walks us through her version of an endless cycle of rinse and repeat.

Musically, she explores a combination of indie-rock and and pop production featuring timely placed bass notes and heavily reverbed guitar strikes that gives it an almost Black Keys type feel.  These are all good things and I’m hoping a full album released will rely on this type of production.  Staying true to herself – Grace maintains the use of her ukulele and singing style.  Her voice remains powerful and her tone, magical.

Today, we get a visual to go along with the story.  What she’s done is, create on video, the same kind of power she brings to her live performances.  There’s the slow movements that build until she unleashes her bursts of energy, as the camera tries to keep up.  The “backup Grace singers” (which are her) give the video a dark and interesting feel.  It almost feels like it could be a trailer to dramatic thriller type film.  I know she’s still a teenager but the song and new video feel way beyond her years.

Like the song itself, the video is well done and like I’ve stated previously.  The sky is the limit for this talented artist.  What’s next?  Letters Vol 1.  November 22nd.
